How Does Palworld Breeding Work?
Palworld uses a Combi Rank system to determine breeding outcomes. Every Pal has a unique Combi Rank value — the lower the rank, the rarer the Pal. When two Pals breed inside a Breeding Farm, the child's target Combi Rank is calculated using this formula:
Child Combi Rank = floor( (Parent 1 Combi Rank + Parent 2 Combi Rank) / 2 )The game then finds the Pal whose own Combi Rank is closest to this target value — that Pal becomes the offspring. If two Pals are equally close in rank, the one with the lower Combi Rank takes priority.
Special Breeding Combinations
Certain rare Pals — mostly elemental variants such as Frostallion Noct, Suzaku Aqua, and Lyleen Noct — can only be obtained through a specific, fixed parent pair. These special combos override the rank formula entirely. Our calculator checks for special combinations first before applying the standard formula.
Step-by-Step Breeding Guide
- Build a Breeding Farm — Unlocked at Technology Level 19. Requires 100 Wood, 20 Stone, and 50 Fiber to construct.
- Assign two Pals of opposite genders to the farm.
- Add Cake to the box inside the farm — this is the required food item for breeding (crafted at a Cooking Pot).
- Wait for the egg to appear, then place it in an Egg Incubator to hatch your offspring.
Tips for Efficient Breeding
- Work backwards with the reverse lookup: Use the "Find Parents" tab above to discover every parent pair that can produce your desired Pal.
- Chain breeds toward legendaries: Sometimes the fastest path to a legendary Pal is breeding mid-tier Pals to progressively lower your average Combi Rank.
- Passive skills are inherited: Each parent has roughly a 50% chance per skill to pass it to the offspring. Prioritize parents with traits like Legend, Swift, or Musclehead.
- Same species breeding: Breeding two of the same Pal always produces the same species — ideal for stacking passive skills without changing the offspring type.
- IVs and stats: Condensing duplicates into a single Pal using the Pal Condenser raises its passive skill stars, boosting HP, Attack, and Defense.
Best Breeding Pairs for Legendary Pals
Legendary Pals have the lowest Combi Ranks (460–500), making them the hardest to target. The most reliable approach is to breed two Pals whose Combi Ranks average to the target rank. Use the Find Parents tab to generate a complete list of all valid pairs for any legendary.
| Legendary Pal | Combi Rank | Easiest Route |
|---|---|---|
| Jetragon | 460 | Breed two Pals averaging rank 460 — typically other legendaries or near-legendary Pals |
| Necromus | 470 | Pairs like Shadowbeak + Paladius get you very close |
| Paladius | 480 | Pairs like Shadowbeak + Necromus average to ~485 |
| Frostallion | 480 | Shadowbeak + Paladius works well |
| Shadowbeak | 500 | Breed Astegon + Helzephyr for a rank-500 target |
Frequently Asked Questions
- Can I breed the same species together?
- Yes — same-species breeding always produces the same species (unless a special combo overrides it). This is the best method for stacking passive skills.
- Does gender affect the offspring species?
- No. For standard breeding the Combi Rank formula is completely gender-agnostic. Gender only matters when a special combination is gender-locked.
- What is the fastest way to get a Jetragon from breeding?
- Jetragon has Combi Rank 460 — the lowest in the game. You need two Pals whose ranks average to exactly 460. The most practical route is using two legendaries (e.g., two Necromus at rank 470 each). More often, players catch Jetragon in the wild near the volcano biome.
- Is this calculator accurate for all Palworld updates?
- This calculator uses community-verified Combi Rank data. Palworld updates may adjust values — always cross-check with the Palworld Wiki for the latest figures.
