What Is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value derived from a person's weight and height. It is a widely used screening tool to assess whether an individual has a healthy body weight relative to their height.
BMI Formula
The standard formula is: BMI = Weight (kg) ÷ Height² (m²). For imperial units: BMI = (Weight in lbs × 703) ÷ Height² (in²).
BMI Categories
- Underweight: Below 18.5
- Normal weight: 18.5 – 24.9
- Overweight: 25 – 29.9
- Obese Class I: 30 – 34.9

Health Risks
A BMI outside the normal range is associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, sleep apnoea, and certain cancers.
Limitations of BMI
BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat. Athletes may have a high BMI due to muscle mass. For a complete picture consult a healthcare professional.
